OEffects Pedals For Banjo Players? What? Wait! What?... Players are asking; and we are not surprised. With the trend in Americana and folk music driving banjo pickup sales some players see Effects as a natural evolution in their signal chain.

Some of the things we have seen suggested and used  in addition to basic direct boxes and EQ’s are modulation effects like Delay and chorus but their really doesn’t seem to be a rule so the sky is the limit when courting our elusive  musical muse. Our advice; Try them all!

When you consider the low cost of easily accessible effects on the market today, you can even afford to hoard effects. How about a banjo with fuzz or a sub octave growl, or perhaps a undulating tremolo would be more suited! You really can’t make a mistake. Here are a list of the most suggested lines for the banjo;

I have always loved the sound of a banjo and think that some effects could give a banjo player some new direction. "Eddie Van Scruugs"!

I've seen people use mild overdrive with a tube amp, kind of like Santana does.

What do you recommend for a pickup system?

I was at Merlefest a couple years ago and a banjo booth was set up.
Effects pedals were the hot product for banjo players.

I think the only rule is, there shouldn't be any rules. Effects on a Banjo? Absolutely. Heaven forbid we brake with tradition!

There is nobody quite like that guy. Bella Fleck. That isn't to say we should tarnish or forget the history of the instrument (My grandfather was a pro banjo player on the southern circuit in the mid 50's) but while I cut my teeth on bluegrass I also think there always has to be room to expand what the instrument can do.

What’s the difference between a chain saw and a banjo?

You can always tune up the chain saw.

What is the definition of perfect pitch? When the banjo lands inside without hitting any of the outside walls of the dumpster.
